Turner Timberland (7/5/2008)
The trail along Conant Road to The Big Apple is closed and ATV's are prohibited from riding on the runway. Riders must ride to Murray's for gas and food using the ridge trail. We are working on an alternate route and will let you know as soon as we have opened it for riding.

Trail near Stud Mill Road (7/5/2008)
The ATV trail that runs along the pipeline near the stud mill road in Township 35 near woodchopper ridge will be closed the weekend of July 11th through the 13th. They are working on the gas pipeline so we have to close the trail while this is going on. (Information obtain from atvmaine.org)

Mt Blue Trail Closure (7/4/2008)
There was 5 inches of rain last night at Mt. Blue State Park and have several large washouts and the trail is closed. Both the Mt. Blue road and the Center Hill road are washed out and closed as well. Please check the ATV Trail Info for more trails closures. (Information obtain from atvmaine.org)

The trail leading to J&S Oil is now back open!! STAY ON THE NEW TRAIL!!!! We are working on opening a new park and ride, more info to come.

Valley ATV Riders (6/2/2008)
Please check website for the latest on trail openings. Some trail repair delays due to assessments still going on from the spring flood damage. Funding is an issue. It may be a while before some trails will open, be careful out there... enjoy the wildlife. Send us your photos. :) Don in Northern Maine

Somerset Ridge Runners (5/29/2008)
We would like to update how the trails are coming along in the Hartland, Pittsfield area. The rail bed from Pittsfield to Hartland is in great shape and open. The trails going to St/ Albans and to Devil's Head scenic overlook have been all signed and now are open. Very nice view looking over Great Moose Pond. The trail continues to Harmony were people can stop at the local store for gas, food, ect. The Skowhegan trail from Hartland to Skowhegan, Athens and Canaan is open, there are some rocky and muddy areas and people should travel with caution as more work is planned for this section.

Shifting Gears

See your owner’s manual for instructions on shifting your model of ATV. There are several types of transmissions on ATVs.

Be certain you know how to operate the transmission of the ATV you are riding.

Always close the throttle while shifting to prevent the front wheels from lifting. Learn the sounds of your engine so you can shift to keep the engine speed in the most efficient range.

If your ATV has a manual clutch, learn where the engagement zone is to prevent stalling, and to allow for smooth shifting.
